Not living in the US anymore, jaywalking just seems like a weird law. Like if its not safe to cross I don't need a law telling me not to do it.

8
u/Tomoko_Lovecraft Dec 23 '22
It was a law pushed by automotive companies to shift the blame from drivers to pedestrians. Jay was a derogatory word for someone unfamiliar with city living. The kicker is that in most state laws, when driving the pedestrian has the right of way even if they are breaking the law.

Ya see, the trick is to wait for an opening where you have more than enough time to safely make it to the other side of the road.

Imagine being a grown up and learning how to cross a road and being told you will get fined if you don't cross where the little green man lives?

You shouldn't get fined but you definitely shouldn't be able to sue if you get hit either

As long as they’re jaywalking. You can also claim roadkill there too I think. So win win, get rid of a jaywalker and dinner for a while.

Dont you have to buy tags if you claim road kill? What are the tag fees for human?

I live in RVA. I'd risk jaywalking here. In Norva, I wouldn't risk crossing the street at all. Not even at a corner🤣

Do you all really call nova norva in Richmond?

Not sure. I work for a company that handles all of VA, DC & MD and that's what we use. I think it's just us

Yeah, that’s interesting. It makes sense, but I don’t think I’ve ever heard that before. Sort of like me trying to get all my friends to call the Fairfax County Pkwy, the FairCo Pkwy instead.

They had and probably still have government ads like this when I lived in China back in 05. They were posted outside of major intersections where jaywalking is prevalent, as well as grade schools.
The ads there are much more graphic and show the real deal, what brains look like and everything

u/justafang Dec 22 '22
What is funny is that in VA, the law favors the car, in DC, even if they jump in front of your car and you hit them, its your fault

In ca they just passed a law that makes it ok to Jay walk. BUT, they can only do so if it is safe. So if you get hit by a car, it wasn't safe. Blame is on the pedestrian.

u/Exsces95 Dec 23 '22
As far as I am aware, where I grew up in spain, jaywalking is illegal and always the pedestrians fault. However, if you hit a pedestrian crossing a crosswalk you are in DEEP shit.
In my town people will not fucking stop or look at crosswalks. But almost no jaywalking whatsoever. That said we have crossroads every few yards so it’s not like there is a need for jaywalking anyways.
5
u/Livid-Relationship-2 Dec 23 '22
Jaywalking use to be illegal here. 99 percent used crosswalks and it was law that you stop for them at crosswalks, which is still that way at the crosswalks. But now with legal jaywalking, it will not be your fault if you hit them. They are suppose to cross at their safety and when safe only. I'm not worried about it. That's why I have a dashcam.

u/K-ibukaj Dec 23 '22
In Poland you must yield to every pedestrian on a crosswalk, and in residential zones (you can walk on the street in residential zones). I fucking hate cars, so I just barge into the crosswalk, staring down the drivers, because I know that if they hit me not only will they rot in jail but I will also inflict deep psychological damage.

21
u/they_are_out_there Dec 22 '22
Jaywalking is legal in California starting Jan 1, 2023. Reasonable care needs to be taken and people need to realize that vehicles need a reasonable amount of time to brake, but if the street can be safely crossed without interfering with traffic, it’s completely legal.
28
u/NaveenM94 Dec 22 '22
America decided to be car-centric after WWII so the roads are designed to put autos first. If you walk onto most roads in America you’re putting your life at risk, hence the need for “jaywalking” laws. Not sure who Jay is and why he was always walking into the middle of the road though.
11
u/evilotto77 Dec 22 '22
You say that though, when I was in the US I would have said your roads are safer as they're so damn straight, it's easy to see what's coming. You don't have the sort of winding country roads lined by hedges that we have, with 60mph speed limits on them
8
u/iHateReddit_srsly Dec 22 '22
They're safer than a less developed car centric country because (in general) the roads in the US are designed well and with consistency. If you never get out of your car, it's probably the best place in the world to drive.
However, compared to an actual liveable city that doesn't prioritize cars, the US design is horrible and dangerous.

West Virginia at night in the rain or snow is also scary. Twisty ass roads and locals will run you over.
2
u/NaveenM94 Dec 23 '22
They’re decent enough for cars but for pedestrians it’s a hellscape unless you live in a city. But only decent for cars, and we still have a ton of problems there too. Google “stroads”.
0
u/are_you_nucking_futs Dec 23 '22
America has some of the most dangerous roads in the west. Though this is largely down to the popularity of cross roads over roundabouts.
3
u/throwawayyy55576 Dec 22 '22
Looking at the rising obesity rates in the past 50 years in the US, that might have been a mistake.
4
u/NaveenM94 Dec 22 '22
Yep. It's been a huge mistake. From a health perspective, from a healthcare perspective (obese people require more healthcare, which costs us all more money), and from an environmental perspective, since all these cars pollute like crazy and all these roads equal enormous damage to ecosystems.

It's upsetting when you're just driving down the road and some idiot runs in front of your car causing you to hit them. Not only have they ruined their own life but now they've ruined my life as well because now I have to live with seeing you get run over by my car.
34
u/Dagostar Dec 22 '22
Generally we find looking before crossing the road a pretty effective safeguard against this sort of thing.
27
u/unnamed_ned Dec 22 '22
Ah, but you're not thinking like an asshole.
Because pedestrians generally have the right of way, it is not uncommon to see assholes charge into traffic and cause an accident in order to sue whoever hits them. That's the reason why jaywalking is such a big problem, and hence why it is illegal.
9
u/are_you_nucking_futs Dec 23 '22
What a load of nonsense. People aren’t risking death or serious injury in a hope to sue you. As others have said, other countries don’t have jaywalking laws and people aren’t jumping out in front of cars.
2
4
u/evilotto77 Dec 22 '22
I'm not so sure, we don't have jaywalking laws here and certainly don't have a big problem with people charging in to traffic. Just a highway code and general safety awareness about crossing roads and there we go
8
u/gabeheadman Dec 22 '22
"Assholes" <- missing that key part of that. Regular people don't do these things.
3
u/TheDutchin Dec 23 '22

u/PM_ME_YOUR_ANT_FARMS Dec 23 '22
Yea this guys full of it. Jaywalking was invented by automobile manufacturers, it's not some "so you don't run in front of cars and sue them" law lol
0
u/Fubarahh Dec 23 '22
Ah, but you're not thinking like an asshole.
Lol, I almost gave you a thumbs up for this.
But, I couldn't, bc I don't believe that people, even crazy assholes, would risk pain, disability, loss of limbs, or death just to make a buck.
Btw, there's a reason the car insurance companies have policies that prevent people from suing. It's a torte or something. You pay a fortune for insurance, then would have to pay a 2nd fortune for the right to sue.
So, even people in cars who hit each other don't have the ability to sue. It cut down on malicious prosecution & nuisance lawsuits tremendously.

Just looked this up. The US has campaigns similar, but outside of being a child, adults do not learn from these. Rule #1 THINK! First find the safest place to cross. Well the safest place to cross is at a designated crosswalk which would not be jaywalking. You are not going to get a jaywalking ticket for crossing a barely driven rode. It is more for roads that have cars coming frequently if not non-stop, thus if we follow the green cross code, the safest place again would be the crosswalk.

u/mirthquake Dec 23 '22
It's not a widely enforced crime in America. It's a matter of daily behavior. I'm nearly 40, have crossed the road at will my entire life, and have never been so much as honked at. I don't believe it's considered a crime in the places I've lived. I've never heard of any acquaintance being ticketed for it. "Jaywalking" sounds like a notably outdated term to me.

In high school (Florida, naturally) I got a police warning for 'jaywalking' by crossing the stroad on my bike outside a crosswalk. Maybe it should've been reckless driving since a bike is a vehicle Lol go figure. Felt a lot safer shooting gaps in traffic than crossing at the four-way stop junction of two divided-highways before sunrise with minimal lighting and no crosswalks painted.

Not sure if this was California or just Los Angeles, the law here (up until the newest one) was that you could not jaywalk if there was a crosswalk on the nearest cross-street either on the left or right. My office was right by the corner of Hollywood and Highland where all the tourists go and would watch this play out daily between cops, tourists, and locals - the layout is such that there was a tiny strip of about 100 feet where you could technically jaywalk.
2
5
u/KawaiiDere Dec 22 '22
The term’s origin is so weird too, because “jay” used to mean something about stupid rural people, but everyone in the city jaywalks. It’s literally the bare minimum of urban adaptation

Stepping out in front of traffic outside of a crosswalk is not innocent. You're purposely putting yourself in danger and obstructing the right of way of traffic on the road.
30
u/syzamix Dec 22 '22
Come see the condition of roads in the US where crosswalks are not considered while designing roads and most people are forced to jaywalk or walk extra miles just to cross the road...
It's like saying you poor people are stupid to take payday loans. Clearly they are bad for you. While totally ignoring the conditions are set up to force their hand.
Once the traffic designers start making reasonable cross walks it will improve but it will also result in cars having to stop more
4
u/Spice999999 Dec 22 '22
Ok but running out in front of traffic is putting yourself in absolute danger. If the road is empty it's fine but running into a busy street is your own fault
0
u/marioman63 Dec 23 '22
Man's out here defending jaywalking and putting themself in danger because "fuck society" or something.
3
u/syzamix Dec 23 '22
Are you American? Do you not understand basic concepts like bad public pedestrian infrastructure? Streets designed only for cars?
Visit real developed countries to see how to build good streets. Then you'll understand what North America is missing.
4
u/cheemio Dec 23 '22
…uh, no? Obviously don’t walk without looking or giving proper clearance to cars. But it’s quite easy to cross without a crosswalk. Just wait till there’s a gap in traffic. and just… walk.
10
u/MagicElf755 Dec 22 '22
In the UK you can cross the reod wherever you like and it isn't a problem, people just make sure it's clear before crossing
7
u/MoarVespenegas Dec 22 '22
Shifting the responsibility and blame on pedestrians instead of cars is the point.
The ones driving massive dangerous vehicles that endanger everyone else are the ones who should be responsible for not killing people.0
0
u/saremei Dec 23 '22

Even without the "decriminalization" of jaywalking, the California Driver's Handbook states that all pedestrians have the right of way. If you're driving a vehicle - no matter the make or model - you are in control of a deadly weapon, and should drive defensively and carefully. Yet more and more often, I've seen drivers speed up even though the light is already red. Too bad there's not more traffic cameras on the street corners.

Where I live they made a rule that a car must yield to pedestrians in all circumstances, even if the pedestrian is in the wrong, it’s so you know, we don’t have justified vehicular manslaughter exceptions…. The sad thing is that it needed legislated at all
0
u/MountainPast3951 Dec 23 '22
So I I'm going 15-20 mph on a residential street, where the speed limit is usually 25 mph, and someone runs into the street without looking, it's my fault? Some people walk around oblivious to their surroundings. I had a man walk right into my stopped car because his phone was more important than the fact he was walking around cars. There are idiots behind the wheel and some walking around amongst us.
3
u/CraseyCasey Dec 23 '22
It’s not your fault if some darts out in front of your car, but if a pedestrian is crossing against the light, the rule is u must yield, cus the alternative is legal GTA on the streets Obviously the pedestrian is defenceless
