AMA - verified This is Dermot Kennedy and I'm hosting my first Reddit AMA around my new album 'Sonder.' Ask me anything!

Hi everyone,

My name’s Dermot Kennedy and I’m an Irish singer/songwriter who started off busking in the streets of Dublin over 10 years ago. I’m constantly influenced by so many different kinds of music, from Bon Iver to Drake and Taylor Swift (you may have recently come across my cover of ‘Anti-Hero’ on this very channel). When I’m not on stage, you’ll always find me with a book in hand, hitting up a coffee shop or watching/playing sports (I’m a Manchester United fan, don’t judge me).

My second studio album 'Sonder' is out now, and it revolves around the realisation that each random passerby is living a life as vivid and complex as your own. I am very proud of it and hope more than anything that there’s something you can connect with in these songs. I can’t wait to play them for you live on the ‘Sonder’ tour next year and can’t believe I’m headlining Madison Square Garden! Hope to see you at a show or surprise busk soon!

other Ticketmaster - “Sorry, another fan beat you to this ticket” but the concert is in 5 months and it’s not a mega-popular band.

I apologize if this is the wrong sub- please point me to the right one if so. I’m trying to see Bikini Kill 5 months from now. I am really surprised, as I’ve never had this issue at another concert or with ticket master— I saw The Smashing Pumpkins after buying tickets the night before the show. Bikini Kill is a big deal but they aren’t Lady Gaga big, and the concert isn’t for 5 months. Could it be a bot attack? Is there any way to beat this?

UPDATE: screw ticket master. I went on the venue’s website like a couple of you said to do and I got tickets for much cheaper than ticket master advertised them to be, no hassle. Deleting my account immediately… what the hell.

event info U.S. Senators to Investigate Ticketmaster’s Dominance Over Concert Ticket Sales

U.S. Senators Amy Klobuchar and Mike Lee will lead a new subcommittee investigating the lack of competition in ticketing markets. Klobuchar stressed the need to scrutinize Ticketmaster’s dominance over the concert ticket market in light of chaotic Taylor Swift Eras Tour sales last week. “Ticketmaster’s website failed hundreds of thousands of fans hoping to purchase concert tickets,” Klobuchar said. “The high fees, site disruptions, and cancellations that customers experienced shows how Ticketmaster’s dominant market position means the company does not face any pressure to continually innovate and improve.”

Ticketmaster blamed unprecedented demand and a “staggering number of bot attacks” for the Eras Tour fiasco, ultimately canceling a scheduled on-sale date for the remaining tickets. The company apologized to Swift, who had written a pointed statement that read, in part, “It’s really difficult for me to trust an outside entity with these relationships and loyalties, and excruciating for me to just watch mistakes happen with no recourse.” She added, “I’m not going to make excuses for anyone because we asked them, multiple times, if they could handle this kind of demand and we were assured they could.”

Two days after the initial debacle, Klobuchar took up the cause in a letter linking Ticketmaster’s “dramatic service failures” to its “power in the primary ticket market.” Klobuchar, a Democrat from Minnesota, chairs the Senate judiciary subcommittee on competition policy, antitrust, and consumer rights, of which Lee, a Utah Republican, is a ranking member. The hearing date has not yet been set.

discussion Ticketmaster’s Taylor Swift chaos triggers US Senate antitrust hearing

A US Senate antitrust panel will go ahead with a hearing on the lack of competition in the country’s ticketing industry after Ticketmaster’s problems last week managing the sale of Taylor Swift tickets.

Ticketmaster’s parent company, Live Nation, has blamed presale problems for Swift’s Eras tour – the pop superstar’s first US tour in five years – on “unprecedented demand” and an effort to keep out bots run by ticket scalpers.

After registered fans struggled with glitches for hours to get tickets in the presale, and tickets quickly began appearing for resale for as much as US$22,700 (£19,100, A$33,500), Ticketmaster cancelled sales to the general public. It later claimed the demand for Swift tickets “could have filled 900 stadiums”.

Swift has said it was “excruciating” for her to watch fans struggling to secure tickets and that she had been assured Ticketmaster could handle the demand.

The chaos attracted the attention of US politicians, many of whom have voiced concerns about how dominant Ticketmaster has become after it merged with the entertainment company Live Nation in 2010.

Tennessee’s attorney general, Jonathan Skrmetti, has said he will launch a consumer protection investigation into the company after his office was bombarded with complaints from Swift fans.

The congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has also criticised the merger. “Daily reminder that Ticketmaster is a monopoly, its merger with Live Nation should never have been approved, and they need to be reined in,” she tweeted. “Break them up.”

On Tuesday the senator Amy Klobuchar, who will chair the panel, and the senator Mike Lee, the top Republican on the committee, announced the Senate hearing would go ahead. They have yet to provide a date or a list of witnesses.

“The high fees, site disruptions and cancellations that customers experienced shows how Ticketmaster’s dominant market position means the company does not face any pressure to continually innovate and improve,” Klobuchar said. “We will hold a hearing on how consolidation in the live entertainment and ticketing industry harms customers and artists alike.”

Ticketmaster denied any anti-competitive practices and said it remained under a consent decree with the Department of Justice after the 2010 merger, adding there was no “evidence of systemic violations of the consent decree”.

“Ticketmaster has a significant share of the primary ticketing services market because of the large gap that exists between the quality of the Ticketmaster system and the next best primary ticketing system,” the company said.

Klobuchar was one of three lawmakers who argued in a letter on Monday that Ticketmaster and Live Nation should be broken up by the Department of Justice if any misconduct was found in an ongoing investigation.

The department has proven in recent years to be much more willing to file antitrust lawsuits against giant companies – including the ongoing December 2020 lawsuit against Google – and to fight mergers.

discussion Do you ever feel bad for not branching out more?

Rock and metal are my favorite genres. I love Pop-punk, post-hardcore, metalcore, deathcore, thrash metal, and alt-metal. Sometimes I feel bad because that makes up like 75% of my music and I feel like there’s so much I’m missing out on. Like, I know I enjoy pop, hip-hop, folk, synth pop, and just all these other genres. I probably listen to like 5 artists in each of those subgenres. Meanwhile, I can say I’m very familiar with like 20+ metalcore bands, like 10+ pop punk bands, etc. I find myself going deeper into these subgenres I really like rather than checking out famous artists.

It turns out that I really enjoy John Denver, Styx, Alice In Chains, Madonna, just all these big artists I’ve never checked out before. I’m young and I have the rest of my life to check out new music and the classics. But I feel like there’s this mental checklist where there are artists I have to check out.

discussion Who still listens to Lostprophets?

This is tough, I've always enjoyed their music and I know about the heinous shit that Ian (lead singer) has done. The musicians themselves are fucking great..and I really love their sound...is it wrong to enjoy their music? It will always be tainted by him but I still want to enjoy their music.
