Karen followed me out of CIRA to continue harassing me for asking her son not to pull back the curtains to the dressing room (he did it to me when I was half naked). Her husband and family then charge up and assault my husband I front of our sons. Karen and sister then assault me for recording. WTF! Karen Freakout

That was my exact thought. I used to bounce at shitty college bars in my undergrad and law school days and he's the exact kind of guy who would spend 30 minutes making a huge deal out of taking off his baseball cap, then his sunglasses, then his shitty graphic t-shirt, then empty out the pockets of his cargo shorts, and by then, hopefully one of us bouncers will have stepped in and stopped the "fight" (eta: and if not, then it would turn into an additional 30 minutes of "hold me back, bro/why I oughta knock your block off!" play acting)

Classic "negotiation whining" tactic. The aggressively high pitch accusation is meant to create two sides to a situation that clearly only has one side. It's the Karen's version of the old lawyer wisdom: "If you have the facts on your side, pound the facts; if you have the law on your side, pound the law; if you have neither the facts nor the law, pound the table."
→ More replies149
u/qwikfingers 7d ago
Never heard this version of the quote before. I believe the original is:

Reminds me of this one incident years ago some Karen's pocket dog bit my leg and it drew blood. She was super apologetic until I asked for her number in case it got infected. I didn't have health insurance and I thought since her poorly trained shitdog bit me she would be willing to do what was necessary.
Instead she went into full panic mode, started blaming me for harassing her, calling me an asshole, and made a b-line toward her condo complex.
The Karen subspecies cannot handle feelings of guilt. They go full DARVO panic when faced with it.

u/CaptainBayouBilly 7d ago
Just in case this situation ever happens again, call animal control and the health department. Any animal bite should be considered rabid unless proven otherwise (current animal vaccine etc.). If the animal is not current on their rabies vaccination, there are protocols (post exposure vaccination etc.) that are very important and timely.
The animals must be put in quarantine and observed, and the owners are responsible for any medical expenses for the victim.

What's wild to me is they have to call these people and tell them to get vaccinated, and they argue with them about it!
I know it's expensive, but even if animal control has the animal and is testing it, you want to at least start the series. You don't know when they'll have the results saying if the animal was rabid, but you do want to prevent catching rabies ASAP if it was.

I would say this family has connections in law enforcement or is a part of it themselves, given that the police did nothing even with multiple witnesses, and videos. They even tell OP that she was lucky to be recording or else her husband was going to be arrested. Just your everyday criminals in blue protecting one another, nothing new or out of the ordinary. At least they aren't pretending to investigate themselves and eventually clear themselves of any wrong doings
→ More replies138

Jesus Christ. People have lost their minds and civil decorum has gone out the window. I, as a mother, would have apologized and given my son a serious talk about respecting peoples privacy. Her behavior is all kinds of wrong.
477
u/TheHarperValleyPTA 7d ago
I have noticed such a shift in parenting over the last several years as an elementary school teacher. There are some parents who cannot handle their children’s behavior being corrected at ALL. “But he’s 6. But he’s just doing what little boys do!” Right, which is why it is our job to TEACH him, not let him run rampant and avert our gaze! They aren’t born knowing!
If parents refuse to correct their kids, however, they shouldn’t be surprised when society does it for them.
122
u/seeclick8 7d ago
Yes I agree. I was both an elementary teacher and then middle school counselor for my career of 43 years. I did see a change in behavior. I will never forget when one mother of a middle school kid came into the school ( back before Columbine and the locking of all doors), and marched into the cafeteria where her daughter was lined up for lunch and started yelling at another girl for some kind of disrespect to her daughter. She was promptly escorted out after being explained to about the inappropriateness of that and asked how she would react if someone did that to her daughter. Many years later I had the daughters kids. She was very nice as a mom.

I'm not a teacher, but I came across parents like this when I worked retail. They would just abandon their kids in the toy section. If you tried to clean up behind the kid, you couldn't say anything to them at all, or they would go cry to their parents who would then find you and give you hell for it.
Like, I never said anything if a kid was just quietly and politely looking at things, but occasionally they were doing something unsafe like climbing on the shelves or running around and I had no choice.
→ More replies→ More replies119
u/Kinet1ca 7d ago
Yeah this isn't normal behavior from adults, kids do this kinda thing and it doesn't even mean they're pervs, you see a curtain and want to know what's behind it. As you stated the normal reaction should have been to apologize and have a talk with your kid about privacy, it's a pretty low stakes situation, no need to get offended or upset or physically assault someone over it.

Fort Collins PD told my husband he’s lucky we got video showing my husband didn’t strike at all or he would’ve been arrested. Neither Karen or her family were arrested which makes PO’s comment to us disturbing and worried about living in Fort Collins. My kids never want to go back to Old Town again…it’s one of our favorite places for family outings. Truly disappointed in this family’s behavior and their choice to attack us. The worst part is these two entitled brats admitted everything to the police in an effort to justify their actions and were still not arrested.
Thanks Fort Collins PD for teaching my children that people can attack you in broad daylight, get caught on video and have multiple witnesses to the event only to not be arrested.

Correct! Take a look at the Chief's statement which included
"People were treated differently! Not true!"
He's not wrong. They treated the victims as perpetrators and charged them with disorderly conduct and also charged the perpetrators with the same charges. Treated the same!
"No one was held accountable. Not true. We charged four adults with disorderly conduct."
That's not holding them accountable. Two people assaulted two others, filed a false report, etc. They were not charged with assault nor cited for filing a false police report. Now they all, I assume seperately, have court dates for disorderly conduct, rather than having them square off for assault charges.
This behavior, meaning the doubling down on puiss-poor police response instead of apologizing and correcting mistakes, is a contributing factor in distrust and disdain towrd law enforcement. And the killing of unarmed black people, corruption, "civil forfeiture", posession of military equipment castoffs, gangs, unchecked racism, favoritism, political influence, lack of accountability, taxpayer funded payouts for legal troubles...

Well the husband did rush in and without getting any context or de-escalating, chose violence. Seems like a cop thing to do.

Police exist to collect revenue. No money to be made from this. They’ll do it if you make enough fuss but they’re going to take their chances on not lifting a finger

Oh wow, cops being useless pieces of shit? What a shocking change of pace! oh wait... No, that's most cops 95% of the time. We're basically all on our own out there. Carry pepper spray or something.

Yeah the incidents of police killing and brutalizing people rightly grab the most attention, but it's worth noting how incredibly lazy most cops are.
It's a culture of impunity. No consequences for doing their job poorly or not at all. Implying that a victim of a broad daylight assault is actually the one facing criminal risk is exactly the way cops make complaints go away. Asking a cop to do their job is the quickest way to earn their hostility.

The number of times people have their stuff stolen and cops say "sorry, it's a civil matter, can't help you" is just fucked.
No, motherfucker, it's not a civil matter, it's fucking theft, it's a god damn felony. Get off your useless fucking ass and earn your paycheck, cop bitch.

My neighbor shot a gun through our shared wall one night. I saw it the next morning and called the cops because what the fuck, that is not cool. If I had been on the couch it would've gone straight through my head. The cops came and said they didn't have probable cause to search the neighbors apartment! The neighbors weren't even living there legally, they were squatters who hadn't signed a lease and didn't pay rent. The cops knocked on their door, asked if they knew anything about the fucking bullethole going from their apartment to mine (the angle it was at meant it definitely originated in their apartment, it didn't just pass through) which they denied, so the cops just fucking left.
That and a few other incidents I heard from friends and family when sharing the story really cemented it for me. Not only can cops be violent racist murdering assholes, even when they aren't, they do not do anything. This idea that they solve crimes or protect the public is a fiction taught to us by copoganda tv shows. Cops, as they exist today, do not add anything of value to our society. They exist to protect the property of the rich and to disrupt and dismantle any attempt to organize by the working class and that is it.

BACK STORY:
I’m trying on dresses at a clothing boutique named CIRA. I see a little boy pull back the curtains of my dressing room and I say, “hey someone’s in here don’t do that.” Karen being filmed then snaps at me, “DON’T TALK TO HIM LIKE THAT!” I told her, “ I’m just asking him not to pull back the curtains of my dressing room.” And she starts yelling at me outside my dressing room, “YOU YELLED AT HIM! HE’S ONLY 6!”
I decide to leave. I’m not mad at the kid. I’m upset with how his family started yelling at me outside my dressing room. I tell the dressing room attendant on my way out that I left all the clothes in the dressing room and that I just didn’t feel comfortable with the family in the back. I LEAVE THE STORE.
I walk out to where my family is situated. Karen follows me out of the store and just wouldn’t drop the situation. She wanted to me to go apologize to the 6 year old for “yelling at him”. I started recording after she tried lunging at me in front of my son and my husband walked over from the patio on the left (he still doesn’t know what is going on).
Recording Starts Yes, at this point I’m audibly upset. This woman has followed me out of the store, demanding I apologize to her child and even when I walked away, she continued to follow me. Now she’s trying to attack me. Her husband in the Aggies shirt was actually charging up to attack me. You can see it in the video he’s walking straight towards me and my son right behind. His eyes are locked on my direction which is why my husband got in front of me.
My husband works in the bar industry and consistently sees people get arrested for way less. Coincidentally, they happen to be POC more often than not. If the tables were turned and it were my husband who attacked this man, he would be sitting in County Jail.

Sorry you went through this. I live in Fort Collins and hope this is made right for you. This is definitely not the kind of thing I think of when I think of Fort Collins.
I agree with other commenters that there’s a decent chance this guy has some kind of connection. Sounds like the police wanted to intimidate you into letting it go by telling you they would have arrested your husband. I think it would be worth contacting an attorney to contact the city on your behalf.
I would also send this to Jared Polis

Damn what the hell. You’re right not to be mad at the 6 year old, being young means it’s an opportunity for them to learn how to behave without being arrested. If their parents won’t teach them they’ll have to learn the hard way.

Come post your story and video to /r/racism, this is so blatant. Make sure you write up everything you can remember about your interaction with the police. We can help you get it out to the media and file complaints with the police department, even though they will likely investigate themselves and find no wrong-doing. Everything public employees do is public record so you can request body camera footage, copies of the calls placed to them related to this incident, etc.

It's harassment and assault, possibly battery since they both touched you aggressively. I have no idea why they wouldn't be arrested. Can't you press charges yourself as well?

Where do you see that? I just checked that sub. Where did it say as of right now, they have been identified. You mean in the police report? Or that tjey posted on nextdoor?
We cant stop until there is just treatment for all and enforcement is not coming without the pressure of the public...
edit: I'm so jaded... everything with prosecution as so assymetical. It's like high school all over again, if you get beat up by a bully, maybe the bully gets a slap on the wrist, but heaven forbid you put up a fight to defend yourself, then it's equal punishment for all.

I just went back to that thread, and I can’t find those comments. They were from neighbors that said, “we know who they are. Don’t try to seek them out.” Or something like that. I don’t know the exact words, but this was like an hour ago.
Edit, there were 2 separate comments saying they know them. They are no longer there.

This needs to go to the governor's office and state police. It is an open assault. I agree it is corruption. Imagine telling the victim that? Someone has connections.

The guy is prob an off duty cop. Need to bring this to governor's office, state rep, state police or the DA direct. It's assault.

Hate to say this about Colorado because I love this state and grew up here but if you are anything but white and go to a prominent white area you'll always have trouble with someone or side eyes and followed around. I like to think most ppl in Colorado are just normal fucking ppl but the entitle racists really kill it for me. That's why I stick my brown ass in the Lakewood, federal areas. Cherry creek, Fort Collins, Golden, and Boulder are places to visit but not stay a long time at because eventually someone will think you're up to something and harass you.

Correct your children. If you don’t do the dirty work then society will do it for you in a manner much dirtier and less understanding. This was a valuable teaching moment for that little kid and it was smothered by an overprotective mother.

Attorney here (not in Colorado). Where the criminal system fails, civil suits can help. Talk to a local attorney, and you can try to get some form of justice that the police denied you.

No Ma'm, you need to teach your kid that its not okay to invade someone's privacy. Kids can learn, being 6 is not an excuse. He's literally old enough to understand what hes doing lol

But as a reminder, no doxxing is allowed here.
