If that defender literally stood still......

u/lickedTators 7d ago
It's harder to guess where the kick is going to go than you think.

u/theonlyjuan123 7d ago
She's the free kick wall. You're put there to be a wall, no moving allowed.
146
u/HI_I_AM_NEO 7d ago
A one person wall in a direct free kick and the other player crossing in front of the shot like that? That just looks like bad defending, but I would like to watch another angle of the play
92
u/Kel4597 7d ago
Not a one person wall. You see another players right leg/shoulder beside her as she dips tf out of position.
→ More replies29
u/illiterateboii 7d ago
I can only assume she thought a cross was coming but even then you stand still and better keep one angle shut and hope your teammates can handle a cross
20
u/b-okoboko 7d ago
why the fuck are you analyzing mistakes and not appreciating the ridiculous backheel?

u/mitthrawn 7d ago
She is obviously not standing there to be a wall. Doesn't look like it at all. She's probably expecting a cross to the direction she's moving, which is probably what all other players thought in that situation as well. So blaming this on her is ridiculous. She also almost intercepted that pass too... very small margin between intercepting that and having this awesome back heel goal.
→ More replies103
u/jollybigginge 7d ago
The defender doesn't have to guess. The point of having a defender in that position is for them to block the ball travelling in that direction....just to stand there. The finish is great don't get me wrong.

I have to say.... it's really not. I've played baseball, I've played hockey, I've played lots of other sports where a ball of somesort is coming at me and my job was to stop it's progress either by catching it or blocking it.
It's not that hard. I don't know what the hell that defender was looking at or thinking. She literally had to do absolutely nothing to successfully do her job.
16
u/gisb0rne 7d ago
Are you watching the same clip or are did you watch other highlights of this goal? Because in this clip it doesn't look like there is a wall at all. It's pretty ridiculous that you don't even play the sport and here pontificating on an out of context clip and calling a professional player terrible.

Yeah, it's so easy to guess where the ball will go, that's why penalty kicks never go in.

u/Fluffy_MrSheep 7d ago
No it's not that defender is literally shit. It's a free kick and your job in a free kick is to stand still and jump when they take it. Had the defender done that then they don't concede

u/highqualitydude 7d ago
No 18 with pink shorts? It looks to me like she was trying to hit the ball with the back of her left foot instead of taking it to the stomach. Why she tried to do that, I don't know. Blocking the ball with your body (but not reaching with your arm) is allowed by the rules, right?

Really don't see the need of adding women in title op, just call it a nice goal in football instead
Edit- lol just woke up to a bunch of offended women because I pointed out it's a good goal irrespective of the gender. Oh well, women ☕.

It really seems like some people are constantly on the look-out for things to nitpick and be offended about.
Especially in these times when there is a push to generate more interest in woman’s sports, why wouldn’t you want a title that says “Hey, in case you’ve heard that women’s games are less exciting or less impressive, check this out!”
There is a ton of footage of one-in-a-million shots and impressive goals made by men, just because of the sheer size of men’s sports. I probably would not have even bothered clicking on this post just to see another one. As a woman myself, I was pumped to see a woman do some cool shit.

Plus what if someone was searching for cool womans football clips. Typing in just soccer or football would likely result in mostly men. Using woman as a descriptor is good for search results in this situation.

If you haven't seen it already, Ella Toone did this in the final of the Euros (massive international tournament, second only to the World Cup) the other day.

As a man, I PREFER women’s soccer over men’s because of less flopping/falling on purpose and similarly explosive plays.

u/Pillar67 7d ago
Totally. This. Me too. I love watching men's soccer, but I prefer women's for exactly the same reason.

They were trying to virtue signal over petty, unhelpful shit to feel superior. It's what reddit is all about. Especially on a topic like women's sport. Usually 99% of reddit cheers along like clapping seals so people feel rewarded and smug and want to do it again in the next topic.

Its from a women's soccer league so why is it wrong to use the terms women and soccer? People in different parts of the world use different terms. Stop telling people that say soccer that its wrong.

I almost agree with you. We shouldn’t be using an extra quantifier for womens sports really as it does have the habit of reinforcing the idea of it being lesser, as in you have the sport, and the the womens version. It’s not great.
However what we should really be doing is saying men’s football. You see it right across the Olympics and such. It’s not ‘hockey’ and ‘women’s hockey’ or ‘luge’ and ‘women’s luge’, it’s just ‘mens tennis’ and ‘women’s tennis’.

ikr? That said, upon rewatch, she seems committed to moving before the other girl kicks it. She looks a bit silly, but she didn't dive out of the way, she thought the girl was going to try kicking it around her but she didn't lol

Jesus christ football vs soccer comments are obnoxious. Crazy that different countries call things different names yet we all can tell what it meant. And no, not American.
18
u/Schwa142 7d ago
In the interest of being pretentious, lots of people have conveniently forgotten the term soccer was commonly used in the twentieth century until the 80s. Soccer and football/futbol are interchangeable.

u/Fluffy_MrSheep 7d ago
Cuz she's horrible. She's jn the wall for the free kick and she jumps out of it and let's the ball go by I mean what the fuck. Gifted a goal by that player. And people praise the most basic back heel as if she's the next Messi or ronaldo like this happens on a weekly basis.
28
u/PainOfAction 7d ago
In slo mo it looks bad, but she didn't expect the kicker to kick at her, and instead around her, so she tried to predict where the shot was going to go, but the kicker got lucky, and the blocker looked like a fool.
In the end its a bit undisciplined, but most of the time she intercepts and gets away with it.

u/Fluffy_MrSheep 7d ago
look at these examples
this
or
Thisi cant emphasise how important it is to NOT move when you are in the wall, standing still and jumping is the only thing you can do that will maximise the chances of not conceding, the first one is very important because that free kick was actually the game winning goal which knocked the opposing team out of the champions league

I feel like I’m on crazy pills or in a thread with people who have never played the game. This is an insanely mediocre goal. Pretty much everyone I’ve ever played with at school has pulled this off at some point, and not with great effort. It’s not hard, it doesn’t require some special setup, it’s a pretty basic move. Variations of it are done all the time.
This is like someone posting a well executed, basic layup and titling it “amazing basketball skills”.

The defender making an inexcusable mistake doesnt make the attackers redirection any less amazing.
Two things can be true. A lot of amazing sports plays are the result of the opponent messing up. Isnt this obvious? How many people could volley that out of the air into the net and not be total luck

That was an incredible goal by ANY standards, but I'm glad it's being highlighted here for the women's game (I saw a lot of comments about the recent England win of "yes, but it's not the same standard, is it?")
I'm normally someone who would have argued "is it really necessary to comment on gender when it is just a great goal", but in this circumstance, it's important to put this in the face of critics.

In this thread, tons of people who have heard about this sport pretending they are experts and saying how bad the defender is because they didn't stand still. You know, because they heard there's this thing called a wall and defenders are always in the wall and it's their job to be in the wall. Their only job.
How about recognizing that you are clueless about the sport and just admire the skill of the player scoring the goal?
