I think most native English speakers actually call it soccer. Not just the US, but also Canada, Australia, South Africa, and apparently mixed use in Ireland and New Zealand. (On the other hand, most non native speakers say “football”).

They try and spin it as if “only the ignorant arrogant Americans call it soccer”… even though, for example, the 2010 World Cup final (in South Africa) was literally held in a stadium called “soccer city.” Or that the Australian mens national team is commonly referred to as “the soccerroos.”

Furthermore, Soccer is OBJECTIVELY a more specific word. Even people who hate the word know exactly what it means. But in an international space, “football”can cause confusion.

Because there are actually at least 5 different types of football. Association football (soccer), rugby football, Gaelic football American football and Aussie rules football. Now, people can call their favorite variety “football” for short if they want… but it’s pretty arrogant for people to insist that everybody else also use the word “football” only to refer to their favorite variety.

And nobody freaks out when you say “cell phone” instead of “mobile phone,” for example. Or pretty much any other difference between British English and American English. But for some reason, they lose their minds over soccer… which is funny because it’s actually originally a British word (and they still have TV shows like Soccer AM and Soccer Saturday…).

I almost agree with you. We shouldn’t be using an extra quantifier for womens sports really as it does have the habit of reinforcing the idea of it being lesser, as in you have the sport, and the the womens version. It’s not great.

In slo mo it looks bad, but she didn't expect the kicker to kick at her, and instead around her, so she tried to predict where the shot was going to go, but the kicker got lucky, and the blocker looked like a fool.

In the end its a bit undisciplined, but most of the time she intercepts and gets away with it.

I feel like I’m on crazy pills or in a thread with people who have never played the game. This is an insanely mediocre goal. Pretty much everyone I’ve ever played with at school has pulled this off at some point, and not with great effort. It’s not hard, it doesn’t require some special setup, it’s a pretty basic move. Variations of it are done all the time.

This is like someone posting a well executed, basic layup and titling it “amazing basketball skills”.

The defender making an inexcusable mistake doesnt make the attackers redirection any less amazing.

Two things can be true. A lot of amazing sports plays are the result of the opponent messing up. Isnt this obvious? How many people could volley that out of the air into the net and not be total luck

That was an incredible goal by ANY standards, but I'm glad it's being highlighted here for the women's game (I saw a lot of comments about the recent England win of "yes, but it's not the same standard, is it?")
