We had a thread last week, but since the events are kicking off this week we wanted to refresh it with more info.

General Info

Events

Travel/Parking

Waste Management Phoenix Open

These two events are going to bring thousands of people to the Valley so we’re trying to consolidate a place for questions and sharing. If you have good links on events or info we'll try to add it to the main body of the post.

Ask Phoenix First time First Friday was... pleasingly overly stimulating! What must see/do did we miss?

Started out by the big VW and entered the stream of people (was like the EAC) just follow the flow....

saw... so much things...... all the stuff for sale.... everywhere I looked something was going on and new.... a lady sewing lingerie, a guy in a coffin eating ice cream... in a bar, a dance off in front of churro alley, some kinda insta influencer doing a shoot by a giant tv on a truck, a pop up metal band, some guy selling noodles from his make shift hot pot on a tv tray, some kind of dark burning man square with disco lights all over..... cheese square sandwiches, where are those.... pipes, funny t-shirts, crawfish flavored Lays?, scooter crash. just keep swimming.... came across Ike's love and sandwiches - OMG the bread - and Ike was there...

that was the first half.... just got better as we went.

so - what did we miss or is a must do/see when we go again?

Ask Phoenix Water??

So i just moved to phoenix and it’s been interesting adjusting to life here. I am wondering if other people have the same experience. I feel like i am dehydrated all the time but i have been drinking my recommended daily intake? Is this just an AZ thing? I have never lived this far south (grew up in upstate NY and WA) and i’m wondering if that’s affecting it.

Making Friends Where to go as a single in the area?

I know I’ve hit a low when I’m asking Reddit about where to find friends, but alas here we are.

I’m 22M and freshly out of the military. I moved here not too long ago and have been pretty lonely. It’s my first time having to forcibly go out and create a social group from scratch.

My coworkers are considerably older than I am. They pretty much all have families to tend to and are past their time of casually hitting up bars or going out on the weekends.

I tried hitting up the bars at ASU for a bit, and felt overwhelmingly out of place. I’m also nowhere near confident enough to go into clubs by my lonesome. I also tried some dance classes over at the D&B at Tempe Marketplace, but the crowd there is usually also above my age range.

I’ve gone to a couple car meets, but that was not at all my crowd. I enjoy cars, but car meets seem to draw in very obnoxious people/teenagers.

Does anyone know of some good places to just find and meet new people? Or places where people show off their hobbies, maybe I end up catching one of them?

Commuting Help me solve the 202 Westbound daily mystery

I live in Tempe and work at home, but frequently drive to downtown Phoenix for meetings and events at random hours of the workday.

Here's the mystery. Traffic usually moves pretty steadily most times of day including at "rush hour". When I make the trip at 9 am, or 8 am, or 11 am, or 5 pm, or 6 pm, or 8 pm, it usually takes me 20 minutes, maybe 25 if there's a bit of traffic.

But from 2 pm to 4 pm, every day, traffic is absolutely stopped. It takes like 40 minutes to go from Tempe to Phoenix. If course I always forget to leave time for it because who expects crazy traffic at 2 pm?

It ONLY happens going westbound - the highway is totally clear going eastbound. And it seems to happen every day, but only on weekdays.

I can't understand it! Is there some shift change at 3 pm for a specific employer? Some weird quirk related to school pickup? What is happening specifically from 2 pm to 4 pm, specifically going west from Tempe to Phoenix, specifically on weekdays, that causes these crazy traffic jams that don't seem to happen at normal rush hour? Whyyyyyyy

Commuting City Biking with a Toddler

I used to regularly cycle in Tempe and Uptown PHX (where I now live), but having a kid put it on pause for a couple years. I now love the idea of getting back out there with a cargo e-bike to lug my kid around to parks, libraries, and small errands while the weather is nice--but haven't bitten since I have safety concerns.

Stating the obvious: car culture is king here, and even if not openly hostile, drivers are commonly unaware of bikers sharing the road. I'm familiar with the canal system and the Sonoran Bike Path--and would want to leverage routes that minimize cycling alongside cars. Nonetheless, it's not possible to completely avoid, and I wonder if anyone here bikes with a young child or children as a mode of transit vs. pure recreation. If yes, can you share advice and insight about your experience? Ultimately, I don't wanna invest in an expensive bike and new lifestyle that's misaligned with the realities of our city culture and infrastructure.

Lastly, if there's a better subreddit to chat about biking in PHX, please do share!

Ask Phoenix Best place to sell comics and collectibles

So like the title says, I'm looking for a reputable place, that isn't eBay, to sell old comics and stuff that might be collectibles. My parents have some comics and other stuff they want to see if they have any value or not.

Ask Phoenix Stepping Lessons?

Hey all! Does anyone know where I can learn how to step? I’m talking Chicago style stepping. My family is having a reunion in a few months and I’m the only one who can’t step. Would love to stunt on my Aunties and their friends.

I’m in North Phoenix but open to travel basically anywhere. Thanks in advance.

I’ve thought I’ve had a lingering cold for like three weeks now, but now I’m starting to think it’s something in the air . . . Constant (but mild) congestion and coughing. Anyone else?

My tattoos artist is in Mexico and I love going for affordable and amazing pieces, but I’m tired of going all the way over there when i want something basically coin sized. Any recommendations for affordable yet trustworthy tattoo shops?

Referral Female hairdresser recs?

So over the past year my hair has been getting increasingly thinner (not normal, I’m in my twenties ffs) and I’m hoping to get it styled in a way to hide how it’s been looking. My old hairdresser was a sweet person but not someone whose work made me 100% comfortable, and tbh I would prefer the next hairdresser to be a woman. Any suggestions?? Anywhere in the Phoenix & Scottsdale area.

Things To Do Card shops around Phoenix?

One of my hobbies is finding good greeting cards to send friends from afar for various occasions. Do you guys have any good recommendations for cute little gift shops that may have unique greeting cards? 😊
