So Pacific seafood is really good in chandler, and that's about it. The ones in casino arizona, which was the only Vegas style buffet, never opened back up after covid. Sucks that should be a mainstay.

3

u/Belialxyn Aug 14 '22

They closed the pacific seafood by me in Peoria. Tragic

3

u/harryfan324 Aug 14 '22

Thank god I bought a place in Chandler, I have tried all others and they are clearly the best. I will pay increased prices though if they do open the one in Casino Arizona back up....no one serves crabs legs anymore.

2

u/icepuente North Peoria Aug 14 '22

They just moved places further down Bell

2

u/Belialxyn Aug 14 '22

For real!?

u/icepuente North Peoria Aug 14 '22 Silver

I think so, Pacific Seafood Buffet https://goo.gl/maps/5dJm8HcbPRNxqEDv8

2

u/Belialxyn Aug 14 '22

Score! Thanks!

1

u/Enchilada_Style_ Aug 22 '22

Pacific was not good several years ago when I went. Have you tried Lin’s? To me it’s the best Chinese buffet I’ve seen in Phoenix

1

u/harryfan324 Aug 22 '22

Ha I almost puked when I tried that place, it's not good and its dirty. Pacific is only open in Chandler now, and they offer the most item for the cheapest price, including real seafood and korean short ribs.

1

u/Enchilada_Style_ Aug 23 '22

That’s crazy. I thought the same of pacific

12

u/Supernovaperspective Aug 14 '22

I was just speaking to my co-worker about the salads at sweet tomatoes. I miss them, she misses them. Bring them backkkkkk!!

4

u/x467v Aug 14 '22

Sweet tomatoes was awesome,

11

u/Logvin Tempe Aug 14 '22

Don’t forget Brazilian steakhouses. Those places usually have a huge top end buffet combined with unlimited food. The only difference is they bring meat to you vs having it in the buffet line. It’s a “modern” buffet.

u/tvieno Aug 13 '22

COVID killed the buffet except at casinos.

23

u/LBramit13 South Scottsdale Aug 13 '22

Even at the casinos. Most Vegas buffets never reopened

4

u/SaltySpitoonReg Aug 14 '22

Really? Did the az ones shut down as well?

3

u/SaltySpitoonReg Aug 14 '22

That's a bummer. I wonder if they ever will.

7

u/Chemical_Relation521 Aug 14 '22

I know for a fact the Bacchanal Buffet at Caesars palace is open in Vegas.

5

u/SaltySpitoonReg Aug 14 '22

Cool. I think they're going to come back at least in that way, casinos. I mean if you're willing to go into a casino in crowd around a bunch of people, you're going to be willing to go to a buffet.

I'm not sure if we're ever going to see stand alone restaurant buffets come back, though.

4

u/xForeignMetal Aug 14 '22

I went to the MGM Grand buffet last week, so theres still some open

3

u/SaltySpitoonReg Aug 14 '22

Okay thanks. I didn't know that I fully believed what that person was saying that all of the casino buffets are completely closed down. Especially in vegas.

Especially because many of these buffets still involve the staff serving you.

2

u/ima314lot Surprise Aug 14 '22

A few did, but it is very few and far between.

41

u/Truck_Fast Aug 13 '22

Buffet's died long ago, sure there were some but who under 40 actively goes to them? I really don't understand the desire, other than variety, the food is terrible and you know COVID has made me hyper aware of the amount of people that don't wash their hands after the bathroom.

8

u/CoffeeNoob2 Aug 14 '22

This is it. Also, who over 40 goes to buffet? I don't think the body can take it anymore. When I was in my 20s, I can eat and eat and eat, quantity over quality. But now, I'd rather spend my money eating higher quality food.

12

u/DarthTimber Aug 13 '22

Golden corral is horrible. I highly recommend the Indian buffets, Chinese buffets are hit and miss. Does any know of a good American buffet?

3

u/Everman6721 Aug 14 '22

Where is an Indian Buffett open?

1

u/Plus-Comfort Aug 15 '22

Nandini at Broadway and McClintock in Tempe

-27

u/TrancedSlut Aug 14 '22

Indian food is so gross. I've never understood how people could stomach it.

3

u/DarthTimber Aug 14 '22

What have you tried and where? And why is it unappetizing

41

u/Downtown_Ad6627 Aug 14 '22

I miss sweet tomatoes

8

u/Electrical-Comb-1252 Aug 14 '22

This was my favorite place to go...the soups were killer as was the salad bar selection.

6

u/Klutzy_Collar7678 Aug 14 '22

An absolute tragedy. So many good times there. Always fresh. Always clean. Now the only salad 🥗 bar I have found is Sizzler at 51st Ave and Indian School. Yea it’s Sizzler but for what it is it reminds me of a simpler time.

7

u/adagna Aug 14 '22

Where did they go? Covid killed them. Buffets usually operate on a razors edge profit margin as it is without getting shut down for months with seating limitations and the like. I'd imagine it'll take a few years to get them back up and rolling. But I doubt Sweet Tomatoes will be back sadly. I definitely miss those salads.

u/KurtRambis31 Aug 13 '22

The dreaded 3C’s: Contaminations, Coronaries and Covid

3

u/TheRaddd Aug 14 '22

I thought it was Climate, Copper, Cattle

8

u/Logvin Tempe Aug 14 '22

If you are talking about Arizona, you have to add Citrus and cotton for our 5 C’s.

2

u/TheRaddd Aug 14 '22

I always forget those two

3

u/Logvin Tempe Aug 14 '22

If you went to public school here in AZ, 3/5 ain’t a bad number ;)

4

u/Shagyam Aug 14 '22

Covid. Not to mention employee labor is more expensive so it's harder to keep employees. and still make a profit.

14

u/dildobagginss Aug 13 '22

I kinda miss the self service salad bars but other than that I don't miss buffet food.

5

u/RubyDooby01 Aug 14 '22

Lin’s Grand Buffet on Baseline

6

u/mrsouthmountain Aug 14 '22

They gave me the diarrheas

4

u/SaltySpitoonReg Aug 14 '22

I mean I feel like even before covid the only buffets outside of casinos were terrible.

The casino buffets can be pretty good actually!

Sweet tomatoes was about the only good buffet, unfortunately even before covid they weirdly went away from their buffet style and tried to make it like a standard restaurant and tanked even further.

I don't know if any of the Arizona casino buffets are still operating after covid but if they are it's probably the best bet

Pacific Seafood Buffet - 35th Ave and Dunlap. China Buffet - Bell Rd and Litchfield Harbor Seafood Super Buffet - Metro Parkway near Castles N Coasters Mandarin Super Buffet - 15th Ave and Bethany

There are tons around. Those are just five I could think of right now. And although the names sound strictly Asian, they serve pizza, burgers, steaks, chicken nuggets, etc. And there are tons of Golden Corrals - 59th Ave and Northern, Dysart and Van Buren, etc.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '22

Me and the fam go to Mandarin on 15th ave once in a while. It’s alright, not even close to a 5 star by any means, but it’s the only decent buffet around us. I only get the food that the guys cook for you in the little flat top grill thing, give them a nice tip since they do make the food pretty good! The sushi is meh, for a buffet, I guess. Definitely have tried WAY better. My family isn’t too picky so overall, we don’t mind it. It has gotten pricey though, but what isn’t nowadays? I’d recommend to go try it to people who haven’t gone!

2

u/Electrical-Comb-1252 Aug 14 '22

Agreed...the Mongolian bbq style area in the back is the way to go.

u/charliegriefer Peoria Aug 13 '22

World Buffet shut down during the covus and never re-opened :(

1

u/sonipoop Aug 13 '22 edited Aug 14 '22

Not true. They reopened a while ago.

Edit: I guess their giant Open Now sign is a lie and their new hours online are, too.

4

u/charliegriefer Peoria Aug 13 '22

There's a large sign that says they're open, but I assure you that they are not.

2

u/Shagyam Aug 14 '22

I assure you, we're closed.

1

u/sonipoop Aug 13 '22

Hmm. Interesting. Rocky Point Restaurant was supposed to reopen it.

1

u/charliegriefer Peoria Aug 13 '22

We live off of 99th Ave between Northern and Olive. Right around the corner. It's a decent family night out.

We've been waiting for them to reopen and were excited a few months back when we thought they had.

Then I rode by just to make sure. Still all locked up :(

4

u/sonipoop Aug 13 '22

Well, if you can make the drive to Metro, Harbor Seafood is good.

2

u/charliegriefer Peoria Aug 13 '22

Yeah, been to that one a couple of times. We dig it. But was hard to beat how close World Buffet was.

1

u/infj1029 Aug 14 '22

I live in the area and haven't seen them opened in a long time. :/

1

u/sonipoop Aug 14 '22

Yes, as other commenters and I have already discovered in other comments right below this, their giant sign claiming they reopened and their online hours are not true.

Buffets fell out of favor decades ago. There's a few still around. The only one I know is still open is a Golden Corral in Mesa just south of Baseline on Cooper.

There used to be a Hometown Buffet in Scottsdale, but it closed down about 8 or 9 years ago.

2

u/AZ_Corwyn East Mesa Aug 14 '22

I think you mean South of baseline on Stapley/Cooper.

1

u/holy_handgrenade Aug 14 '22

Yeah, I was thinking that's either in Mesa or Gilbert, so typed Gilbert for some reason ;)

Corrected it in the post.

1

u/TrancedSlut Aug 14 '22

That and I think it's called Lynn's on baseline by the i10

5

u/BlumpkinDude Aug 14 '22

I love the buffets. My wife is from Eastern Europe and was shocked at Golden Corral. She had never seen anything like it before. The holiday buffets are the best. We did Thanksgiving at one of the casinos a few years ago and it was decadent.

6

u/Impossible-Lynx7416 Aug 14 '22

I miss Sweet Tomatoes soooo much 💔

8

u/azgamerepair Aug 13 '22

Buffets are nasty. Poorly kept food touched by random people. No thank you. Last time i went to one the person changing out the trays wiped down the surface of them with the same damp cloth she had been wiping down chairs with. 🤮

2

u/Dapper_Reputation_16 Aug 13 '22

They went the way of salad bars.

2

u/makaflame Aug 14 '22

I worked at Jason deli and they have a salad bar after having to manage that little salad bar it makes me hate buffet style food the amount of grossness there is and the lack of care of random customers was awful to watch ... One time a lady dropped the crouton tongs on the floor and proceeded to put them back I stopped her midway for her putting them back and she told me I didn't have to do that and I said ma'am it touched the floor yes I have to ... Like come on now

2

u/Ambrosial Aug 14 '22

You can still find buffets at local Indian food restaurants, and Brazilian steakhouses however the day of the traditional buffet are gone for a while from what I’ve seen.

2

u/Anyusernamewilldo7 Aug 14 '22

I know a couple of decent Indian buffets- Chennai Chettinad and Udipi (Tempe)

1

u/biffbenderhouse Aug 14 '22

Buffets… gross. No exaggeration, GI discomfort or full blown food poisoning everytime other than when I was a little kid.

1

u/TrancedSlut Aug 14 '22

I have a pretty sensitive stomach and I haven't ever had an issue. The worst the will happen is that it goes through quickly but that will happen for any restaurant I don't go to often.

I just mention that because your experience isn't typical.

2

u/biffbenderhouse Aug 14 '22

Lol i dont have a sensitive stomach but a trip to a buffet and im guaranteed to be peeing out my butt later

1

u/Diresteaks Aug 14 '22

Went to Golden Corral once as a kid. Two of the kids we went with ended up hospitalized from salmonella.

The casinos here still have buffets I think.

1

Golden corral 55th & Northern is okay. If you're a senior go at 345pm you pay for lunch which includes the drinks. Dinner is out in 15 mins.

Golden coral, 59th Ave and Northern.

1

u/Master-Big-937 Aug 15 '22

Jason’s deli on the west side of metro center has a pretty good salad buffet.

1

u/NerdyBirdyAZ Aug 16 '22

Golden Corral gave both me and my husband food poisoning, or something bad i'm not sure. We tested for covid so it wasn't that. Husband had diarrhea and vomiting the few days after, I just had dizziness/nausea. The servers go from picking up dirty dishes to touching the glasses for drink refills. i don't think they sanitize/wash their hands. so stay away from GC

0

u/Temporary-Mirror621 Aug 14 '22

Buffets are dead and rightly so haha Covid really just sank the knife further.
